YouTube description template: a copy-paste layout that works (and how to keep it updated)

A good YouTube description template saves time on every upload and keeps your channel consistent. Here is a copy-paste template you can use today, the reasoning behind each section, and what to do when the links, codes, or disclosures inside your template need to change across every video at once.

Quick answer: A solid YouTube description template has five parts: a unique first sentence about the video, key links near the top, timestamps, a short channel footer with your standard links and disclosures, and up to three hashtags at the end. Copy the template below, make the first line unique per video, and keep the footer identical everywhere — that consistency is the whole point, and it is also what makes bulk updates possible later.

The copy-paste template

Replace the bracketed parts. Everything else can stay identical across videos:

[One sentence about THIS video — what it shows and who it helps.]

[Key link mentioned in the video]
[Second key link, if any]

Chapters:
0:00 [Intro]
[Timestamps for each section]

—
[One line about your channel and who it is for.]
Website: [your site]
[Other standard links — newsletter, community, socials]

[Disclosure line, if you use affiliate links or sponsorships:
"Some links are affiliate links — I earn a small commission
at no extra cost to you."]

Why each section earns its place

The first sentence does the heavy lifting

The first 150 characters can appear in Google and YouTube search results, and the first two lines are all viewers see before tapping "more." This is the one part of the template that should change on every upload. Write it for a human deciding whether to watch, using the words they would have typed to find the video.

Key links go above the fold

If the video mentions a product, article, or download, link it in the first few lines. Links buried under the fold get a fraction of the clicks. Keep URLs clean and readable — recognizable domains earn more trust than opaque shorteners.

Chapters help viewers and search

Timestamps create clickable chapters and give YouTube more text to understand the video. Start at 0:00 or chapters will not activate.

The footer is your boilerplate

One line about the channel, your standard links, and any disclosure you are required to make. If you use affiliate links, the FTC expects a clear disclosure near those links — see our walkthrough of FTC disclosure for YouTube affiliate links and the placement rules in where to put affiliate links on YouTube.

Hashtags: three, at the end

The first three hashtags in a description appear above the video title. More than 60 and YouTube ignores them all. Three relevant tags at the very bottom is the sweet spot.

The part nobody plans for: updating the template later

A template is a promise you make to every future video — and every past one. Sooner or later something in the footer changes:

  • Your website or a social handle moves to a new URL.
  • A sponsor or affiliate program changes its links.
  • You reword your disclosure line and want it consistent everywhere.
  • You add a newsletter link and want it on your back catalog, not just new uploads.

On a small channel you can edit videos one by one. Past a few dozen uploads, that stops being realistic. YouTube Studio's bulk edit only adds or removes text at the very start or end of descriptions — it cannot find and replace a line in the middle. We broke down exactly what it can and cannot do in YouTube Studio bulk edit limitations.

This is the gap Description Modifier fills: true find-and-replace inside every description on your channel. Swap the old URL for the new one wherever it appears, preview every change before it happens, and undo if you need to. Saved blocks keep your template sections handy, and a broken-link scan catches footer links that quietly died. The free plan includes 3 full runs with no card required, so you can fix your whole footer before deciding anything.

A template only works if it stays current

Pick a template, apply it consistently, and put a reminder in your calendar a few times a year to check the links in it. When something changes, change it everywhere — your future self, and your viewers, will thank you.
