Black Friday YouTube affiliate marketing: update old links and codes

Get existing YouTube video descriptions ready for Black Friday: verify affiliate offers, replace outdated links and discount codes, preview changes, and plan around the shared daily editing allowance.

Quick answer: Before Black Friday, check the affiliate links and discount codes in your older YouTube videos, not just your next upload. Verify the new offer, replace the exact outdated text, review the surrounding claims, and test the result. Description Modifier offers true find-and-replace inside YouTube descriptions, rather than only adding text above or below what is already there.

Why Black Friday preparation includes your older videos

YouTube affiliate marketing can leave you with the same product link in many different descriptions. A previous gift guide, tutorial or review may still contain last year’s discount code. Updating the description of a new video does not fix those older offers.

This guide is for YouTube affiliate marketers who already have links in their catalog. It is a seasonal cleanup workflow, not a promise of higher commissions. For the basics, read our guide to YouTube affiliate marketing and link maintenance.

1. Build an old-to-new offer checklist

Start with videos that still receive views and that mention products included in a confirmed promotion. Your affiliate program or merchant should supply the current link, code and terms. Do not assume a code from last year will work again.

  • Old text: Copy the exact URL or discount code currently in the description.
  • Replacement: Record the verified new URL or code.
  • Dates: Check when the offer starts and ends, including its time zone.
  • Restrictions: Check eligible products, countries and any exclusions.
  • Tracking: Confirm the affiliate identifier and attribution rules in the program itself.
  • Context: Note any nearby price, discount or expiry wording that also needs changing.

A page loading successfully does not prove the link earns commission. Likewise, a valid code might not apply to the product your video recommends. Verify the destination and program terms before editing.

2. Replace the exact link or code, not the whole description

For a single video, edit its description in YouTube Studio. For the same outdated text across several videos, use a targeted replacement. YouTube Studio’s bulk append/prepend options add text at the beginning or end; they do not find and replace an old code within the description body. Adding a new link can leave the old one visible too.

  1. Select the videos relevant to the confirmed offer.
  2. Enter the complete old URL or the specific old code as the text to find.
  3. Enter the verified replacement in Description Modifier.
  4. Review each preview for unintended matches and conflicting offer wording.
  5. Apply only the intended changes, then open edited videos to check the result.

Avoid a broad replacement such as “2025” across every description: it could change dates unrelated to the promotion. An exact code or complete URL is easier to review. If you have several link variants, treat them as separate edits. Follow our find-and-replace walkthrough for the detailed process.

3. Keep the video’s recommendation and disclosure accurate

Replacing a link does not automatically update “20% off,” an expiry date or a price beside it. Check those statements separately. Do not quietly send viewers to a different product under an old recommendation. If the video itself mentions an expired offer, explain that clearly rather than making the description contradict it.

Preserve the unique video summary and chapters. YouTube recommends unique descriptions and useful opening lines in its description-writing guidance.

Keep affiliate relationships clearly disclosed. For US audiences, the FTC’s endorsement guidance explains that an endorsement in a video needs disclosure in the video, not only in its description. Updating description text alone does not guarantee compliance. Review your program’s rules and the requirements for your market too.

4. Allow time for the shared daily editing limit

Do not leave a large catalog refresh until the promotion starts. Description edits use a shared YouTube daily allowance across Description Modifier customers. A large run can stop partway and may need more than one day to complete.

The allowance resets at midnight Pacific, but a reset does not reserve capacity for your account. We have requested more editing capacity from YouTube; approval is still pending as of October 29, 2026. Paid access does not bypass this limit, and undo needs allowance too.

If a run stops, check the run summary and retry only the videos that still need changing. Do not repeat a replacement blindly over videos already updated. Our daily-limit help page explains the reset and partial-run recovery.

5. Plan the cleanup after the offer ends

Record the promotion’s end date and the text you will need to remove or replace. When it ends, verify a suitable evergreen link or remove the expired offer. Do not assume a scheduled reversal or undo can finish if the shared allowance has already run out.

Measure results in YouTube Analytics and your affiliate dashboard. Accurate links make descriptions more useful, but a link swap does not guarantee more views, sales or commission.

Try 25 videos for free

Start with a small, relevant group of videos and one known outdated link. Description Modifier works on Chrome and Edge. The Free plan includes three lifetime runs, with up to 25 videos per run, and no card is needed. Runs do not reset monthly. You can manually find and replace known links on Free; automatic broken-link scanning requires a paid plan.

For a short cleanup project, the $5 48-Hour Pass gives one channel 48 hours of Pro AI features and ends automatically, with nothing to remember to cancel. The shared editing limit still applies. See simple pricing or install Description Modifier to get started.
