How to change a description on YouTube (video and channel) — and how to change many at once

Changing a YouTube description takes under a minute in YouTube Studio — for one video. Here's exactly where to click on desktop and mobile, how to edit your channel description, whether edits affect your views, and what to do when you need to change descriptions across your whole catalog.

Quick answer: To change a video description, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, click the video, edit the Description field, and hit Save. To change your channel description, go to Customization → Basic info. Both take under a minute. The hard part is not changing one description — it is changing the same link, sponsor name, or sentence across dozens or hundreds of videos, which YouTube Studio cannot do on its own.

How to change a video description on desktop

  1. Go to studio.youtube.com and sign in.
  2. Click Content in the left menu to see your videos.
  3. Hover over the video and click the pencil icon (Details).
  4. Edit the Description field. You have up to 5,000 characters.
  5. Click Save in the top-right corner.

The change is live immediately. Put the most important sentence and your key link in the first 150 characters — that is the part that can appear in search results before someone clicks.

How to change a video description on your phone

  1. Install the free YouTube Studio app (separate from the main YouTube app).
  2. Tap Content and choose the video.
  3. Tap the pencil icon, edit the description, and save.

This works well for a quick fix on one video. For anything across many videos, a computer is the right tool — more on that below.

How to change your channel description

Your channel description is the text on your channel's About tab — it is separate from your video descriptions. In YouTube Studio, go to Customization → Basic info, edit the Description field, and click Publish. Treat it like a storefront sign: say what the channel is about, who it is for, and include your most important link.

Does changing a description affect views?

This is the most common worry, and the answer is reassuring: editing a description does not reset your video or penalize it. A clearer, more accurate description can help YouTube and Google understand the video, and fixing dead links or outdated offers improves the experience for viewers who do click. What hurts is leaving descriptions stale — old sponsor links, expired discount codes, and broken URLs quietly cost you clicks and trust.

Where YouTube Studio stops: changing many descriptions at once

Everything above works for one video at a time. But sooner or later every creator hits the same wall: a sponsor changes its landing page, an affiliate program closes, or you rebrand — and the old text is sitting in the middle of 80 descriptions.

YouTube Studio does have a bulk edit, but it can only add or remove text at the very beginning or end of descriptions. It cannot find one specific link or sentence wherever it appears. We break down exactly what it can and cannot do in YouTube Studio's bulk edit limitations.

That gap is why we built Description Modifier. It adds true find-and-replace inside YouTube descriptions: search your whole catalog for the exact text, see a line-by-line preview of every change, apply it, and undo the batch later if you need to. If your real goal is to change all your YouTube descriptions at once, that is the difference between an afternoon of copy-paste and about ten minutes.

A simple routine that keeps descriptions healthy

  • Fix singles in Studio. One-off tweaks are fastest right in YouTube Studio, desktop or mobile.
  • Batch the repeats. Anything that appears in more than a few descriptions — links, codes, disclosures, hashtags — belongs in a find-and-replace run, not manual edits.
  • Check links every few months. A broken-link scan catches dead URLs before your viewers do.
  • Keep disclosures current. If you use affiliate links, make sure the required disclosure wording is present next to them.

Try it on your own channel

Description Modifier is a Chrome and Edge extension. The free plan includes 3 full bulk edits with no card required, and the $5 48-Hour Pass unlocks every feature for two days — like renting a movie, but you get a lot more done. Install it, run a find-and-replace on something small, and see the preview before anything changes.
